      The Main Characters

      The Count of Monte Cristo

The mysterious aristocrat who befriends Albert in Luna to gain access to the aristocratic society in Paris. He seem to own an ever-growing fortune, though where he gets it from is never specifically mentioned. He was formerly known as Edmund Dant?s, an innocent man who supposedly died in the infamous prison called Chateau d'lf. The series is based on the planning and execution of the "perfect revenge."

      Hayd?e

The beautiful, elegant Princess of Janina whose family was betrayed by General Fernand in the past. Hayd?e is often seen playing the harp in the home of the Count. She claims that the Count's wishes are her wishes, and generally doesn't show very much emotion until it's time for her to play her part in the Count's grand revenge.

Her particular character was there to show that even though things look like they're okay, they're really not. Hayd?e is portrayed as an elegant, in-control type of person - her calm, almost stony facial expression, and the harmony she creates when she plays her harp. However, beneath the surface, we find that she's really still that lost little girl whose parents were brutally murdered. She's still a girl who cannot forget her pain, and she wears a beautiful shell to hide all this.

      General Fernand de Morcerf

The father of Albert, the former best friend of Edmund Dant?s, and husband to Merc?d?s. He is a famous and powerful military general in charge of the Parisian army. In the past, he and Edmund were rivals for Merc?d?s's affection. He is also guilty of murdering the King and Queen of Janina, and guilty of selling the young Princess Hayd?e as a slavegirl. He was formerly known as Fernand Mondego.

      Merc?d?s de Morcerf

Former-fianc? to Edmund Dant?s, mother of Albert, and wife to General Fernand. Her character is generally that of a high-class aristocrat lady, often not knowing what's really going on around her. She still seems to harbor feelings for Edmund. She is most characterized by her tendency to disappear whenever things turn rough.

Overall, I found her to be a hollow type of woman - to be honest, I'm not even sure why Edmund and Fernand even wanted her. Her personality is very similar to that of a gold-digger.

      Viscount Albert de Morcerf

The son of General Fernand and Merc?d?s. He unwittingly acts as the key to the Count's revenge, and remains very "useful" until the end. His naive personality sometimes upsets his friends, but his generally likeable persona allows him to remain in the inner circle. Towards the end, most of the pain and suffering is emphasized by the losses incurred on Albert. He acts as one of the main protagonists in the series.

Albert grows a lot from his encounter with the Count. After his father was lost to scandal, he was suddenly thrust into the real world - he was no longer an aristocrat who could come and go as he pleased. He learned what it meant to be lost.

Perhaps the author's intention was to punish the naive for their naivet?, at least in this animated world if not in the real one. There are people out there who don't know what they're talking about, yet they have the awesome power to make things change.

      Baron Franz d'Epinay

Best friend to Albert - and a very loyal one too. He ends up dying under the hands of the Count in order to save Albert. He was also the one person who came closest to understanding the true identity and intentions of the Count.

Franz's role in the story was mostly aimed towards the theme of friendship. He, out of all the characters, showed how valuable the bonds created between two people actually are - in fact, compared to most of the relationshipps between the characters in the series, he probably demonstrated the "best case scenario."
