The first impression was definitely a clash of Anime and Paris - you're immediately thrown into a culture that's rich in colors and superfluous lifestyles, wild dreams and heated passions. But after the first few minutes of watching all the glitter and glamour, you start to realize there's dissatisfaction and corruption underneath it all -- kind of like a pretty piece of fruit with a rotting core.
The style of artwork used in this series is rarely seen in Japanese animation - rather than coloring characters in plain colors, the artists of this anime filled them in with patterns. Hair would have the texture of smooth marble and coats would boast the intricate designs often found in rich, mahogany furniture.
If you're not watching the series for the story, you're watching for the artwork.
Though this story is based on the long-abused story of The Count of Monte Cristo, new characters, such as the Princess of Janina, play dramatic roles which highlight the impact of betrayal.
The extremely unique style of art, and the unusual mixture of sci-fi with aristocratic glamour makes each episode memorable.
A definite must-see.
