The Main Characters
Himeno Awayuki
The main heroine who starts off the whole storyline. She was chosen to become the new pretear, and was first discovered by Hayate himself in a rather heated run-in with each other. Himeno fights through her insecurity with herself and her family and friends as she makes her way to becoming as adept at pretearing as she can. She remembers the words of her mother, who taught her to care for life and to protect it while it grows.
Hayate
The Leafe Knight of the Wind. His power revolves around the manipulation of air as his weapon, and seems to be one of the most powerful knights in the group. His job in the mortal world is caretaker of the Awayuki gardens, hired by Himeno's father. His relationship with Himeno leads half of the storyline as it evolves from blunt insults to the blushing, unofficial boyfriend of Himeno.
Sasame
The Leafe Knight of Sound. His power revolves around the manipulation of sound as his weapon, and he can "see" almost anything with his ability, no matter the distance. He is one of the strongest of the Leafe knights, and very likely stronger than Hayate. He works with a radio broadcasting station, and soothes the pain that Mawata suffers from her isolation. As the story continues, it is revealed that he was in love with Takako, the Princess of Disaster, and still is even after she became evil.
Kei
The Leafe Knight of Lightning. His power revolves around the manipulation of lightning and thunder as his weapon. His job in the mortal world involves game design and technology. He is very blunt about the facts, and seems to base most of his judgment on them, lending him a harsh quality.
Go
The Leafe Knight of Fire. His power revolves around the manipulation of fire as his weapon. He acts a lot like the babysitter of Mannen, Shinn, and Hajime, and is often seen bossing them around for their own good. He works as an ice cream shop vendor in the mortal world.
Mannen
The Leafe Knight of Ice. His power revolves around the manipulation of ice. He is the eldest of the children trio (himself, Hajime, and Shinn) and is often portrayed as full of male pride and overconfident. He doesn't like it when Go tells him to do what he considers to be trivial jobs, and prefers to fight alongside the older knights. He tends to lead the children trio based on his seniority in their little group.
Hajime
The Leafe Knight of Water. His power revolves around the manipulation of water. His character seems more like an off-the-shelf character, and is often shown following Mannen.
Shinn
The youngest and cutest of the group. He is the Leafe Knight of Earth, and his power revolves around the manipulation of plantlife. He is also the one who seals away defeated demon larvae and other lesser minions of the Princess of Disaster.
Takako, Princess of Disaster
She used to go by the name of Takako when she was the previous pretear, and was later addressed as the "Princess of Disaster" after she changed sides. Her history with the Leafe knights is revealed in advancing steps throughout the series. She had fallen in love with Hayate when she had been pretear, and when their work was finished she confessed her love for him only to learn that he did not share the same feelings for her. Heartbroken, she went to a church and, through a haze of pain, changed into the Princess of Disaster. She decides that she hates the world she had helped to save, only to have it hurt her in the end. Her ultimate goal is to revive the tree of Fenrir, a living tree that possesses an everlasting hunger for Leafe.
Kaoru Awayuki
The father of Himeno, who has been married to his second wife, Natsue Hojo, for a period of one month at the beginning of the series. He used to be a washed-up romance novelist, often drunk and under the strict care of Himeno. He adds some comedy relief to the story as he seems to team up with Hayate to promote Himeno's "Tulip-head" theme.
Mawata Awayuki
Mawata is the most composed of the Awayuki family. She is top-of-her-class, popular, and well-admired by everyone, yet is rarely seen smiling. She misses her father, who had understood her the most, and finds no comfort in her spoiled sister and oblivious mother. She is usually portrayed as an emotionless, mysterious character throughout the series. In the end, Takako attempts to tap into her inner turmoil and use her pain as the base of power for the great tree of Fenrir.
Mayune Awayuki
Mayune is the spoiled, sassy girly-girl of the Awayuki family. She is often shown trying and failing new tricks to embarrass Himeno, usually ending up as the victim of her own traps and taking it out on the butler. She provides most of the comical outlet.
Tanaka
The Awayuki family's butler and driver. One of his main features is his bald head, which is humorously pronounced by his humiliating interactions with Miss Mayune. It seems he has a crush on Natsue that will never see the light of day, but he also seems to be quite happy being close to her as her underling servant.
