I'm pretty sure most of you have heard of the fires going on down in Southern California (where I live). Luckily my house was far away enough that we only got the smoke and with no fires...but a lot of people I know weren't so lucky. Scary when a disaster actually happens in your back yard.
The university I attend almost cancelled classes because of all the smoke, and several people couldn't make it to school at all. I missed classes today because the smoke was worsening my breathing problems ><.
Some photos to share with you all...
These were taken by my dad on his way to work, using his phone camera. These were taken during the day - when the California morning is usually a bright, sunny atmosphere. Now it's like a storm.
The one with the fence in it is from our back yard. At night we could see the fires glowing from only a few miles away. Since a ton of trees are now gone, the winds have been blowing like crazy - our outdoor table umbrella got blown away to the neighbors' back yard! And when you drive on the freeway you can FEEL the wind pushing you to-and-fro, especially when you have a light model car like I do.
These past few days have been just...wow.
Update 10.28.07Fires mostly gone now. They've found out that the fire was caused by arson - i.e. someone actually started it on purpose.
"The Orange County blaze, which has scorched 28,400 acres and destroyed 15 homes, was believed to have been started by an arsonist Oct. 21 along Santiago Canyon Road. A $285,000 reward is being offered to anyone who offers information that leads to a conviction.
Authorities were seeking the driver of a white Ford F-150 pickup truck seen in the area when the blaze began and were hoping to speak with 35 to 40 people who had gathered near Black Star Canyon Road and taken pictures and video of the fire in its early stage. "They are not suspects. We just want to talk to them" and look at any photos or videotape they have, said Orange County Fire Authority Chief Chip Prather."
Lovely.

Wow, I didn't realize you were in S.California! I hope the fire doesn't come your way and they manage to get it under control soon. x.x I've been keeping a bit up to date, but I haven't had time to read the news lately.
Thanks for your thoughts =). The fire is still going, as far as I can see, but it doesn't look like it'll spread this way yet (the winds have been blowing away from us).
