The Main Characters

Kira Yamato
Aaaah gotta love this character! Actually it's rather hard to separate him from the other main character, Athrun Zala, since both of their characters develop from the influence they have on each other - beautiful tapestry. Kira is a wimp. Not that I admire wimps, mind you, but the total mix of qualities to Kira makes things a lot more interesting: he's unwilling to fight in the beginning - refuses to use his talents as a coordinator to have anything to do with the war - until the war begins to threaten his friends. In many cases, his unnatural genius awes his fellow Natural friends. Conflicts arise over what side he really should be on, and why he's still with the Earth forces. ZAFT forces also fear Kira, for his continuing success as a lone protector standing against three other (and later more) coordinator gundam pilots. Throughout the story, he evolves into a human being who decides to accept the coordinator traits he was created with, and his history, however painful; he begins to utilize his abilities "...to make a difference," as was so often quoted in the TV series. Kira can't keep from worrying and getting himself depressed from all his deep thinking, and then changes to someone more in control of himself and his life.

Athrun Zala
It would seem that Athrun was meant to be Kira's opposite - he was on the opposing ZAFT military forces, a high-ranking member of the military, his father the general of the ZAFT forces, and his reluctance to think beyond his orders. He begins to change when he meets his childhood friend Kira - in battle. Torn between loyalty to his nation, to his father and military friends and superiors, and his best friend from the past, a time when he had believed the whole war was just a fluke, he becomes an embodiment of the pain of irony. Athrun can't think deep - he wants to follow orders and to leave things simple. In the end, he learns the power of true motivation - to follow something other than the old rule book.
