Rurouni Kenshin was actually one of the first animes I've ever seen. So knowing that, this is quite an old "classic" in my book. The beginning introduces the series quite nicely, and definitely starts you going on the storyline. However, it quickly does become episodic after the first dozen episodes or so.
Stylistically, Rurouni Kenshin doesn't have a super-unique style. You can see the same type of drawing style in many anime.
However, I do appreciate the fighting scenes a little more. They tend to seem a little more detailed, with a bit more movement to each move than what is usually shown in anime fight scenes.
I'd like to say I enjoyed this series from the beginning. But it still took some work to get through...all 95 episodes. Still, I have to admit that the story is very good. Watsuki weaves together ancient Japanese history, traditions, and culture with modernized ideas, and especially technology and culture. The art is pretty good--not the best I've seen but B+ range when compared to others. It has a lot to do with moral values and defining a "right to kill"--there is a big emphasis on the Today Vs. Yesterday conflict and adds a bit of irony to that. If you've ever seen the movie The Last Samurai and liked it, you will probably like Rurouni Kenshin :).
